Happy Tree Friends are disturbing for their style as they are very ‘’cutely’’ drawn, from a first glimpse you would presume it was child friendly, until you watch a little further into it.
It has very happy go lucky characters of what you would assume to be child friendly animals, squirrels, moose and bears.
Using bright primary colours and cutesy theme tunes until of course things go wrong and blood starts spurting out of the un-suspecting characters.
This is an arcade game called Limbo on XBOX 360, it is a completely black and white short game featuring a little boy who is looking for his sister, he faces a lot of challenges and scary creatures on his journey.
It’s an entire silhouetted game, featuring background that are extremely detailed that you have to pay close attention as you have to notice things in the background and use them to complete the game.
It uses small highlights to show slight glimpses of sunlight and are used as the boys eyes.
It’s extremely creepy and eerie, the way its filmed always leaves you on edge of your seat.
Announced by an independent game development studio called PLAYDEAD.
I have three more cinematics from this amazing game (Alice: Madness Returns) that I wish to show you, because they are all very different from each other. Although all done In the same style and filmed the same they way they dictate the story makes each scene come into it’s own.
Here for you are The Mad Hatter, The Caterpillar and the Mock turtle.
The Mad Hatter scene is very distressful, very spinney and is filmed rather the same as the last ones;
The Caterpillar shows the Caterpillar in a cocoon and evolving which is normally a very beautiful thing to see, although in this scene they made it more of a evolve or die rather than the beauty of nature;
The Mock Turtle is an amazing scene as you can see the astounding interpretations they have created, a ship in a bottle, also notice how the Griffin from the legendary novel is now the ship and how there are metal sharks on the prowl for some.. Well Mock turtle soup;
This is one of my favourite cinematic scenes of Alice: Madness Returns.
The Walrus and the Carpenter, unfortunately you’ll have to watch these two clips as if they were one as I could not find a video of the full cinematic.
We all know the story of the Walrus and the Carpenter, and if you don’t then shame on you!
It’s a brilliant short story featured in Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll.
The story of how they, both friends, conspire a plan together to lure these oysters to there den with promises of stories and fancy food, but really they are the meal.
As the carpenter prepares the pot for them to boil he returns to find that the fat greedy Walrus has eaten them all and saved none for him.
In this cinematic it’s the same story, different interpretation.
They have told the oysters it’s a show and they are to perform and sing, but instead in front of a full audience of fish, the walrus slaughters them on stage, while the carpenter is the ring bearer as it were, getting the show set up, doing all the hard work, for the Walrus to do essentially nothing but feast.
These are again done in that puppet like manner, a style that I am going to experiment with, they use bold lines and bright colours to make it more effective.
The filming is also spectacular, they follow the gore and slaughter and blur to create a delusional state, where you feel dizzy ad vulgar. Something which would be interesting to play with in such an animation.
You’ll notice that the illustration of the Oysters do not change as they get cut in half but rather get added too, blood and bone for a fuller effect. All in all it’s a very creepy amazing scene of blood, gore and murder.
This is the opening Cinematic to a XBOX 360 game I own called;
Alice: Madness Returns.
The sequel to American McGee's Alice,
Previously released on the PC and re-released onto the XBOX360 to accompany the release of Alice; Madness Returns.
American McGee’s Alice was a very old game and it’s graphics were good for it’s time, but in comparison to the newest release were rigid and flat.
The cinematics were purely just game play action scenes, rather than illustrated like the second game, although they still managed to get through a truly disturbing effect, mainly due to it’s composition and film angles.
Here, you can see for yourself.
American McGee’s Alice:
Alice: Madness Returns:
Madness Returns has such a creepy introduction
as all things seem innocent but then turn gory.
I love the almost puppet like style they use in the animation.
Paper upon paper, with burst of puppetry movements.
Puppets are always creepy whether there hand made, illustrated or animated.
I find these cinematics fascinating and yet scary.
